Dog Sledding on Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska

August 10, 2015

Well, I'm back. Thanks to everyone that commented on some of my old photos while I've been off Smug for 4 weeks. The two weeks in Alaska were incredible. The next two weeks (one in Spain and one in Alabama) were lots of work. So, I'm hoping to not travel for a few weeks.

This is a photo of Bill and I (me in the blue jacket) and the couple that we went to Alaska with. This photo was taken by the driver of this sled dog team. What a wonderful adventure it was!

And, yes - it was just as cold as it looks in this photo. We were flown to the top of the Mendenhall glacier in a helicopter which was also a lot of fun and gave us a bird's eye view of the glaciers that we saw on the way to Mendenahall.

There is a group of dedicated young people that live on the top of the glacier for 9 months of the year. They train dogs for the many sled races, but of course their dream is to run in the famous Iditarod Race (sometimes called the Last Great Race on Earth). It was an amazing trip, and we learned so much. All of the waste from the dogs must be cleaned up, bagged. and hauled away each day to keep the glacier in good shape.

These dogs LOVE to run. The dogs are exercised at least one each day. Those that are selected to pull the sled at that moment are happy, happy dogs.. But, their friends who are left behind waiting for their turn to run, are not happy campers. They get so excited when you hook them up to the sled. The driver commands them by voice. And, when he wants them to stop, for these young dogs, he generally has to put on the brakes to get them stop. They follow his run commands without question - stop is a command they don't particularly like. They generally follow his instructions - except the one to stop. The driver has to teach them (with the brake) to stop.

It's good to be back!
