  • Falling Blue Water

    Falling Blue Water

April 25, 2017 This is a fast shutter speed shot of the water droplets falling from the mysterious Ruby Falls under the Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There's rotating colored lights that illuminate the walls and water fall, hence the colors. "The point is that when I see a sunset or a waterfall or something, for a split second it's so great, because for a little bit I'm out of my brain, and it's got nothing to do with me. I'm not trying to figure it out, you know what I mean? And I wonder if I can somehow find a way to maintain that mind stillness." ~ Chris Evans Thank you for your comments and critiques. Have a mindful day today my friends. Linda

February 19, 2017 This shot was taken as we were traveling on the boat to swim with the Sting Rays just off Grand Cayman. I loved the color of the water. Thank you for your comments and critiques on my new and old photos. SmugMugger's ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!! Linda

  • The Flock has Freaked Out. :-)

The Flock has Freaked Out. :-)

January 25, 2017 As we were driving through Arkansas near the town of Stuttgart, we came upon this moderately sized body of water. Bill and I were astonished to see thousands, and thousands of ducks and geese totally covering the water's surface that stretched about 2 miles. We stopped the car for me to get some photos (of course). As I approached the fence that surrounded the lake, I accidentally startled some of them and they rose into the air so quickly that I was taken aback. You can see how many were in the air here. But look to the background and to the right. You can see how many more that were still on the water. This was just "tiny" portion of the birds that were there. It was quite a sight to see. This is best viewed in the largest size. Thank you for your comments and critiques. Have a "blue-sky" day today my friends. Linda

  • Where the Clouds Meet the Mountains

Where the Clouds Meet the Mountains

November 14, 2016 I'm still mining through the photos from our Alaska trip, so thank you for your comments and patience. It's just such an amazing a beautiful state that it's hard not to capture thousands of wonderful photos. This is one of my favorites that was taken while we were on the cruise ship The Princess Pacific (the original Love Boat). The Love Boat TV series played continuously on one of the channels in our state room. "Climb the mountains, and get their good tidings." ~ John Muir. I'm headed to Boston this morning for a few days of work for my new job. Bill is coming up Wednesday night and we will take a few days to explore the great city. I'm really looking forward to the time off, and I'm thrilled that this is the first "business" travel I've had since July, 2016. Yay! Thank you for your comments and critiques! Have a beautiful day today my friends! I'll do my best to comment while I"m gone this week. Linda

March 11, 2016 This is the Polar Resolution oil tanker leaving College Fjord just ahead of our cruise ship. I've posted a B/W photo of the ship before, but I decided to share the color version as well primarily because the snow covered mountains in the far distance are so majestic in color. • The Eagle Has Left

    The Eagle Has Left

January 13, 2016 I caught this Bald Eagle just as it lifted off a piece of ice that was floating in Alaska's Glacier Bay. We saw a lot of eagles while were were there, but generally they were a great distance away from me and my camera., So, I didn't get a lot of super shots of them. Thank you for your comments and critiques. Have a great day today my friends. I am having minor surgery today on my hand. So I may not be able to comment - typing may be difficult. But if I can... I will comment later this evening on your wonderful photos. Linda

  • The Edge of Blue

    The Edge of Blue

December 17, 2015 This photo was taken from the balcony of our stateroom on the Pacific Princess as we were steaming out of Vancouver towards Alaska. This photo was taken at almost 8:00 p.m. and you can see how light it was at that time. After reaching Alaska, it was a real trip to live in 20 hours of daylight each day. Thank goodness for blackout drapes on the ship and in the lodges on land. The 20 hours of daylight didn't bother us too much because we were so active during the day that the weariness at night overtook us, and we were able fall asleep pretty easily, even though there was still daylight streaming in our windows. Thank you for your comments and constructive critiques, they are appreciated! Have a "Blue Sky" day today my friends. Linda

  • Waterfall Majesty

    Waterfall Majesty

December 14, 2015 Thank you for your comments on my potd yesterday - they were very much appreciated. There are so many beautiful waterfalls in Alaska! Each were unique in their own way, and all of them were beautiful. It's rare to see a waterfall where I live, so to see so many on our two week trip to the state of Alaska was a real treat. Some were small, and some like this one were huge. I loved this huge and magnificent waterfall - and this was just a small part of it. Best viewed in larger sizes. Thank you for your comments and critiques. Have a fantastic day today full of photo ops. Linda

  • Pitch Fork Falls, Yukon Territory, Canada

Pitch Fork Falls, Yukon Territory, Canada

November 11, 2015 This is best viewed in the largest sizes to see all of the details. This is but a very small portion of an amazing waterfall called Pitch Fork Falls in the Yukon Territory of Canada. I was quite a long way away from the falls when I took this photo as evidenced by the 390mm focal length. We passed over the falls on the White Pass Yukon rail train, but I didn't get a good photo of it at that time. You can see the railway bridge about half way up the falls. After ending our lovely one-way train trip, we road back to civilization on a bus which had stopped her for a photo op. I know it's likely impossible that you can read the sign, but in part what it says is that this waterfall is 460 miles south of the Arctic Circle, 69th Meridian. "I love the sounds and the power of pounding water, whether it is the waves or a waterfall." ~ Mike May Have a glorious day today my friends! Thank you for your comments and critiques. Linda Late add: thanks Terry Allen for correcting me that the Yukon Territory is a part of Canada, not Alaska. My mistake.

    Peaceful

October 21, 2015 This photo was taken from the train (through the thick window glass) as we were traveling from Anchorage to Talkeetna, Alaska. As I was working through all the photos, I really loved the peaceful feeling of this small stream. And, there was a bonus with the man and the two small boys that were approaching the stream to fish. Best viewed in larger sizes. Thank you for your suggestions on my "Stranded Turtle" shot yesterday, there were so many great and creative ones. I loved your suggestions! I very much appreciated them all and they made me smile. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!! As always, thank you every day for your comments and critiques. • Blood Moon

    Blood Moon

October 14, 2015 I've tried many times to get a nice clear shot of the moon and have never been very successful. However, during the recent eclipse, I tried again, and voila! I was pretty pleased with this shot of the moon just as the eclipse started. I got some other shots that were good too, but I liked this one the best. October 1, 2015 Although I don't often have the opportunity to visit the ocean, I love it very much and always feel at peace when I am near. There's something so soothing about watching the waves, hearing their roar and marveling at the continuous action which never fails to make me happy. Thank you for your comments and critiques! I'm headed home today! Yay! "We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. • Water Motion

    Water Motion

September 28, 2015 While this isn't a beautiful waterfall, I thought it was pretty. Because I loved the captured motion of the water, splashing on the rocks and flowing into the stream.. This "waterfall" is flowing from an upper stream, through pipes into a lower stream. This was seen at Ketchikan, Alaska in the area where we did our Rain Forest hike. We unfortunately missed the Salmon run in Alaska by about a week, but this is one of the streams that sees a lot of action, lots of salmon - when the right time arrives. "Water is the driving force of all nature." ~ Leonardo da Vinci Have an awesome day today my friends! Thank you for your comments and critiques. Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com

  • Orange and Tourquoise

    Orange and Tourquoise

September 22, 2015 This is a shot of the Glacier Bay National Park boat that brought the NP Ranger to our ship to stay with us for as long as we were in Glacier Bay. The shot was taken early one afternoon from our balcony. The Princess Pacific was just getting ready to anchor down in the bay. I loved the colors here. You can tell by the clothing of the men in the boat how cold it was that day. From nps.gov.org: "In 1879, John Muir relied on Tlingit guides when he first visited Glacier Bay, seeking glaciers, adventure and spiritual enrichment. Muir was the first in a long line of distinguished scientists/naturalists to visit the park, perform research, and bring this remarkable area to the world's attention. Muir was greatly intrigued with the fledgling science of glaciology, and believed that his beloved Yosemite Valley had been carved by ice long ago. He came to Alaska , in part, to witness glaciers in action and substantiate his theory. Largely due to his enthusiastic writings, Glacier Bay became a popular tourist attraction, as well as the focus of scientific inquiries, during the late 1880's and 90's." • Evening On the River

    Evening On the River

September 8, 2015 Late Addition @ 10:08 a.m. cst - Thank you Linda Treleaven for giving me the correct name of the water, it is False Creek, not the Columbia River as I had thought. And thanks too to Jerry Barton for the correct name. It's a paddle board. How cool to have learned two new things today! I really appreciate the information! Here's wishing Linda and Jerry (and all SmugMuggers) a great day. As we were walking around the Granville Island area of Vancouver, BC we really enjoyed all the shops, restaurants, people-watching opportunities, the boats, the water, the pretty skyline of Vancover and the tranquility of the spot.. We were having a glass of tea on one of the restaurant patios when I spotted this loan gentleman leisurely paddling down the Lost Creek (I called it the Columbia River in my original post). I'm not sure what type of item he's kneeling on, but it looked a bit like a flat surfboard. Thanks to Jerry Barton who told me this is called a Paddle Board I still hope SM gets their act together so that everyone's DPC photos with comments show up in the Daily Most Popular today and into the future . My comment is not unChristlike as one Smugmugger suggested yesterday for me to wish for fairness and for photos with comments to show up in the Daily Most Popular group. I did say photos with a ton of comments, but today in the new SM - a ton of comments is as small as one, particularly when you see photos showing up with zero comments. I want everyone's photos to be easily seen by the those that visit Smugmug. "I have lived pain, and my life can tell: I only deepen the wound of the world when I neglect to give thanks for the heavy perfume of wild roses in early July and the song of crickets on summer humid nights and the rivers that run and the stars that rise and the rain that falls and all the good things that a good God gives." ~ Ann Voskamp Have a peaceful and thankful day today my friends. Majestic Mountainscape

August 30, 2015 The "New Smugmug Title" isn't showing on the Daily Most Popular anymore it seems. So, the title of this is: "Majestic Mountainscape" Somewhere along our journey on the Princess Pacific (btw: the original "Love Boat" from the TV series) we enjoyed this stunning view of the mountains cloaked by the low clouds. Alaska is one of the pretties places I've ever had the good fortune to experience. "May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds." ~ Edward Abbey Thank you for your comments & critiques. Have a fantastic day! Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com

August 22, 2015 Morning docking in Ketchikan, Alaska. At this port, we got off the boat, went on a Rain Forest Hike, and had the most amazing Dungeness Crab feast! Wow! What a great port - the first port of our trip! Have a grand day! Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com

  • A Lonely Little Island

    A Lonely Little Island

August 18, 2015 This is the view from our stateroom balcony as we neared Glacier Bay. It was taken at about 7:00 p.m. and you can still see how light it is outside. We did get used to the 20 hours of light in Alaska, but at times it seemed odd. When we arrived home two weeks after we started, Bill commented that "This is the first time we've seen night in two weeks." And it was true. Being light so much was not a problem since we were so active in all the ports, and the stateroom had black out drapes. Have a lovely day today my friends! Thank you for your comments and critiques. • Glacier Bay, Alaska

    Glacier Bay, Alaska

August 14, 2015 Thank you all for your overwhelming response to my post of Terry Allen and I yesterday. It's very much appreciated! One of the many highlights of the Alaska trip was the cruise into Glacier Bay National Park. What an amazing place it was! Early that morning two Park Rangers boarded the ship, and stayed with us until we left the park. We also had an on-ship spokesperson that was broadcasting on TV what they were seeing as we were cruising into this incredible place. We stayed in the Bay for several hours. We were outside most of the time. The temps were freezing - so we had several layers of clothing on + gloves. Oftentimes, we had to go into our suite a few times to warm up. I had on a regular shirt, a sweat shirt, and two jackets plus gloves while I was taking the photos in Glacier Bay........ in JULY! We saw Eagles and Otters. I learned on this trip that I am NOT good at catching BIFs, so hats off to those of you that capture them so well. The most exciting thing that we witnessed while in Glacier Bay was seeing a huge chunk of the glacier calve and fall into the sea. The sound and sight was amazing! My husband Bill caught on video the whole event which is quiet dramatic. He posted it on FB, and got tons of comments & likes. Of course I took dozens of still photos as it was happening. I will be posting a few photos of the event in coming days. "Forests, lakes, and rivers, clouds and winds, stars and flowers, stupendous glaciers and crystal snowflakes - every form of animate or inanimate existence, leaves its impress upon the soul of man." ~ Orison Swett Marden Cherish the blessings of Mother Nature today my friends. The Power of the Ocean

April 25, 2015 Wow! Thank you all for your comments on my photo yesterday (and everyday), I was blown away by them. SmugMugger's ROCK! I don't specifically recall where I was when I took this photo other than I know it was on the west coast of the United States. Bill and I took one of our many driving trips from Seattle to San Francisco all along Highway 101 (aka Pacific Coast Highway, California Route 1) and somewhere along the route, I took this photo. Even though I'm posting in 2015, it was actually taken in 2007. "The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach." ~ Henry Beston Thank you for your comments and critiques. • Solitary Sailing

    Solitary Sailing

January 29, 2015 There was a bit of a haze in the air the day that I took this photo somewhere on the west coast of the USA during one of our many "driving" vacations. I liked the shot even thought it's not technically great. I did love the solitary sailboat. Taken in 2008. "I keep sailing on in this middle passage. I am sailing into the wind and the dark. But I am doing my best to keep my boat steady and my sails full." ~ Arthur Ashe Have a "sails full" sort of day today my friends. Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com

  • Horseshoe Bend - And My Vertigo

Horseshoe Bend - And My Vertigo

October 23, 2014 I have to tell you, the series of shots that I took at Horseshoe Bend made me very nervous. I DO NOT like heights, and in order to get the whole bend (and I didn't accomplish that task very well) you have to get really, really close to the edge of the sheer cliffs overlooking the natural horseshoe of the Colorado River. I remember the first shot on Smugmug that I ever saw of this iconic place was of Judy Horton (fotoeffects) laying on her belly at the edge of the cliff. I salute you Judy for your bravery - I couldn't do it. I thought about you, and tried to lay down, but those butterflies in my tummy just wouldn't let me do it. Thank goodness that Bill was there to set up my tripod for this 5 HDR shot and to keep his steady hand on my back. "I have been overcome by the beauty and richness of our life together, those early mornings setting out, those evenings gleaming with rivers and lakes below us, still holding the last light." ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh Have a lovely day today my friends. Dam!

October 22, 2014 This photo was taken behind the Glen Canyon Dam. These monster structures just amaze me. I have no understanding of the engineering and the mechanics of building one, but I'm really glad that other people do have that knowledge and expertise. Rollin' Down the River

October 21, 2014 Shot from the overlook behind the Glen Canyon Dam near Page, AZ of boats on the Colorado River. The canyon walls were magnificent in their size and the colors. It's hard to imagine how this awesome river carved them over millions of years, but I'm so thankful we have this beauty to enjoy today. Have a fantastic day my friends. • It's a Duck in the Rain

It's a Duck in the Rain

October 5, 2014 I took this photo of the duck in a decorative pond at Pipe Spring National Monument in Arizona. It was raining lightly, but within moments it was raining cats and dogs. Bill and I saw a sign on the highway for Pipe Spring National Monument and decided to go investigate. According to http://www.americansouthwest.net/arizona/pipe_spring/national_monument.html: "Pipe Spring National Monument may be the least well-known of over 20 National Park Service units in Arizona, due in part to its isolated location at the edge of the wide, empty Antelope Valley in the Arizona Strip, cut-off from the rest of the state by the Grand Canyon. This stretch of high desert has long provided a route for cross-country travelers who pass between the great canyon to the south and the high cliffs and mountains of Utah to the north. Historically, the remote far north west corner of Arizona has more in common with Utah, and this region was (or is) the last outpost of polygamy as practised by breakaway groups of the Mormon church. A reliable water source is a rare feature in this generally dry and rather barren country, but early Mormon settlers found such a supply in the mid nineteenth century, about 15 km from the Utah/Arizona border on land which now forms part of the Kaibab-Paiute Indian Reservation. Over the next few decades the spring became the focal point for various buildings and eventually a small fort (named Winsor Castle after its constructor, one A.P. Winsor), intended to protect the spring and neighbouring cattle grazing lands against Navajo Indian raids from the south, although this threat never materialised. Now, the fort, outbuildings, and various agricultural relics are preserved and serve as an interesting illustration of pioneer life." Bill and I throughly enjoyed visiting Pipe Spring, the old fort, the grounds, the awesome little museum and talking with the Ranger that was on duty that day. Indeed it is off the beaten path, but if you're ever in the area, it's a stop worth your time. "Don't quack like a duck, soar like an eagle." ~ Ken Blanchard Have a soaringly good day today my friends! Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com

  • 2013

This is an interesting little stream that was flowing out from an abandoned mine near Ouray, Colorado. The path worn by the water was narrow, and golden yellow in color. I presume that the color was caused by minerals in the soil or the water itself. I'm not sure, nevertheless I thought it was intersting.

    High Altitude Lake

September 29, 2013 L is for Lake. Lake Como, Colorado that is.... This is Lake Como high in the Sangre de Christo Range of the Rocky Mountains. Near Blanca Peak and about 1/2 way between (over the mountains) Ouray Colorado and Telluride. One of the toughest 4 wheel drive ranges in that area. We were at about 13,000 + feet high. Blanco Peak is the 4th highest peak in the U.S. at 14,345 feet. This little lake is nestled way up in the mountains in a pristine area that is just breathtakingly beautiful. This is a shot of the Firehole River in Yellowstone. I was playing around with it, just to see what would happen. When I added the daguerreotype filter from Picmonkey, I rather liked the result, so I post this for my potd. • Lake Yellowstone

    Lake Yellowstone

October 3, 2012 “I'm an old-fashioned guy... I want to be an old man with a beer belly sitting on a porch, looking at a lake or something.” ~ Johnny Depp This is another shot from the West Thumb area of Yellowstone where the mineral water is flowing out to Lake Yellowstone in the background. I was just fascinated by all the many colors that the minerals and algae (bacteria, creature, life forms - whatever it is) created around the hot pools. It's almost hard to believe that life thrives in these generally un-hospitalble conditions. See tomorrow's potd for a close up of these life forms.............It's a pretty cool mosaic. This shot has no PP except for the frame created in Picmonkey. Have a glorious day today my friends! Linda

Kepler Cascade - Yellowstone National Park

September 30, 2012 “Leisure is a form of silence, not noiselessness. It is the silence of contemplation such as occurs when we let our minds rest on a rosebud, a child at play, a Divine mystery, or a waterfall.” ~ Fulton J. Sheen This is one of many photos that I took of the Kepler Cascades waterfall within Yellowstone National Park. It is a lovely waterfall, and as you can imagine a dream for a photographer. It was really hard to choose one of the shots to post, because I liked so many of them, but I chose this one so that my SM friends could see the entirity of the falls. This is SOOC except for the frame. I invite you to check out some of my other favorites of the Kepler Cascades, by clicking on the following links: http://lgood.smugmug.com/Nature/Water/7753850_Vg3dVd#!i=2101385309&k=HTDC8vg http://lgood.smugmug.com/Nature/Water/7753850_Vg3dVd#!i=2101403362&k=936SFc2 http://lgood.smugmug.com/People/Bill-Linda/7752628_cQ4w33#!i=2101419293&k=TB6gchJ Have a day that rapidly cascades to a wonderful treasure at the end of your journey.
