Little Creature Up Close and Personal
August 1, 2013
I can't believe it's August already. Where has this year gone?
But, now that it's August, I certainly have something to look forward to........VACATION!!! Woo hoo. Bill's leaving on the 10th for his 2nd annual pilgrimage to the Bonneville Salt Flats Land Speed Trials. I'll be joining him on Wednesday, the 14th. After that we will follow our noses and wander around Utah in the general direction of Moab. We'll stay there a few days, then head on to Ouray, Colorado to meet up with some friends and spend a couple of days riding the backtrails and exploring the countryside and the old ghost/mining towns in the area.
This oddly colored little fellow was spotted on the side of a building at our neighbor's house. He's odd colored for most of the grasshoppers we see around here primarily because of his orange/red head. When I moved around him to get a better shot/angle he took off, so this is all I got.
I have no idea if he's a regular grasshopper, but he was definitely a juvenile. Papamugger can probably tell us what his real name/species is.
"When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,
And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run
From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;
That is the grasshopper's--he takes the lead
In summer luxury--he has never done
With his delights, for when tired out with fun,
He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed."
- John Keats ~ On the Grasshopper and Cricket
