October 24, 2013 One our way back down the mountain from the mining camp we explored (and that you've seen photos of the last couple of days) we saw this lovely lady watching us from the trees. She was so pretty and kind enough to "strike a pose" for us. Have a won-deer-ful day today my friends. Linda
June 18, 2013 Wow! Thanks so much for the warm welcome and the kind comments yesterday. It's good to be back and I'm hoping to stay for awhile. As I mentioned yesterday, a friend of mine and I did a photo safari of the bluebonnets (Texas' state flower, and much beloved flower) a couple of months ago. I've been able to process some, but not all. Here's one of my favorites. It seemed that the Longhorn and the donkey posed for me in their field of bluebonnets. This year's crop wasn't as abundant as in years past, but there were enough to give us lots of photo ops. Thanks again for the welcome back, and have a terrific Tuesday! Linda
Wyoming Moose Near Jackson Hole
September 19, 2012 "Every creature is better alive than dead, men and moose and pine trees, and he who understands it alright will rather preserve its life than destroy it." ~ Henry David Thoreau As we took our first drive out of Jackson, Wyoming toward Teton Village, we discovered a little side road that looked interesting. So, of course - we decided to take it to see where it led. Just a few yards down the road, we encountered a small stream in a heavily wooded area and saw this bull moose wading in the waters and taking his long, slow drinks of the clear and cool water. He was totally unconcerned that we were there. It was a thrill to be this close (although not that close) and be able to enjoy this lovely creature going about his business. Check this out in the larger sizes - it's very interesting. This is an SOOC photo - the only addition is the frame. Have a Bullwinkle-kind of innocent and Happy Day today my friends!! Linda
October 1, 2011 "Hey You! Stop drinking that coffee, and pointing that thing at me & find me something to eat." ............................. Or so it seemed she was saying. This doe was most curious (but cautious) and she watched us on the front porch of our cabin (at the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, NM) drinking our morning coffee, and me clicking off photos of her. I liked the way she would 'perk' up her ears when she saw me raise the camera. As I mentioned in yesterday's POTD this is one of the deer that was hiding in the brush in front of our cabin in the evenings & in the mornings. This is a morning shot of her. She came out, checked us out, wondered what we were doing, then went on about her business. Thanks for all your awesome comments & support this week my friends! Linda
Giant Aspens, Habitat of the Deer
September 1, 2013 H = Habitat Maybe it also should be for hungry deer. She looks pretty thin, but I did distrub her while she was eating, so maybe she'll start filling out some as the temps begin to drop. We saw her while roaming around the La Sal loop in the La Sal mountains near Moab, UT. Very different terrain from that of the two national parks (Canyonlands and Arches) that Moab is so famous for. But it's a lovely place. I was blown away by the size of the Aspens - many as you can see here, were huge! I've had zero time to work on the vacation photos, but it's my goal to do that today and on the holiday Monday. Also, of course, I'm still on the old version of SmugMug. Maybe....I'll get to that soon. You all take care, have a wonderful Sunday, and a HAPPY H Day!!! Linda
April 5, 2013 You've heard of Urban Cowboys........yes? Well, meet Urban Longhorns. This shot is another from the Lgood archives and is of the cattle drive of Texas Longhorns down the street of the famous Fort Worth Stockyards area. The cattle are driven by cowboys twice a day and are so much fun to see. From the Fortworth.com website: The Texas Longhorn and the American cowboy are two of the most enduring symbols of the Old West. They're a big reason why Fort Worth earned the nickname "Cowtown." And they formed the core of the great cattle drives of the late nineteenth century. Now, the romance and mystique of cowboys and cattle drives returns to Fort Worth with The Herd - Texas Longhorns driven by genuine Texas cowhands - offering an unforgettable glimpse into the past. You'll hear the jingle of spurs, the cattle bawling, and the rhythm of the hoofbeats. As The Herd passes, a bygone era comes to life before your eyes. "We herd sheep, we drive cattle, we lead people. Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way." - George S. Patton Sorry I've been so missing from comments this week. I promise to try to catch up today & over the weekend before I get to leave again for another business trip on Monday 4/8. Have some wild-west sort of fun today my friends. Linda
April 18, 2012 "Hey, Lady!" "Got hay?" "When a cow laughs, does milk come out her nose?" ~Author Unknown I loved the way these two came up to the fence and looked curiously at me as I was pointing my camera at them. They really seemed to be saying something to me, but all I could understand was "Moo" :-)) This is another rainy and misty day shot, so the colors were really heightened. I like the way the mist softens the hills and trees in the rear of the photo. This is SOOC. Thank you all for your kind comments and emails. You all ROCK!!!! I'm woefully behind on my comments since I was away last week, but I'll be working hard to get caught up again soon. Have a moo-velous (in cow-speak, that's marvelous) day my friend! Linda
August 29, 2011 Yes, I know - this is totally out of the ordinary for me, and it does have an 'ick' factor; however, it was late when we got home last night, and I was scrambling to get to work this morning so I grabbed the first shot from the archives that I found somewhat interesting. I have no idea what kind of spider this is - I can tell you he is very tiny, smaller than a dime. I was practicing with the macro lens and saw him and started shooting. He was on the window ledge outside the kitchen window, and I kept my distance as best I could, then went to find other more inviting subjects to shoot. Have a wonderful week my friends, and thanks so much for the awesome comments on the Aluminum Shelby yesterday. You guys rock!!!! Linda
Little Creature Up Close and Personal
August 1, 2013 I can't believe it's August already. Where has this year gone? But, now that it's August, I certainly have something to look forward to........VACATION!!! Woo hoo. Bill's leaving on the 10th for his 2nd annual pilgrimage to the Bonneville Salt Flats Land Speed Trials. I'll be joining him on Wednesday, the 14th. After that we will follow our noses and wander around Utah in the general direction of Moab. We'll stay there a few days, then head on to Ouray, Colorado to meet up with some friends and spend a couple of days riding the backtrails and exploring the countryside and the old ghost/mining towns in the area. This oddly colored little fellow was spotted on the side of a building at our neighbor's house. He's odd colored for most of the grasshoppers we see around here primarily because of his orange/red head. When I moved around him to get a better shot/angle he took off, so this is all I got. I have no idea if he's a regular grasshopper, but he was definitely a juvenile. Papamugger can probably tell us what his real name/species is. "When all the birds are faint with the hot sun, And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead; That is the grasshopper's--he takes the lead In summer luxury--he has never done With his delights, for when tired out with fun, He rests at ease beneath some pleasant weed." - John Keats ~ On the Grasshopper and Cricket Thanks for all the wonderful comments from you guys this week, I humbly appreciate them.
March 27, 2012 A bee's eye........... Spring is definitely here in North Texas, the Carolina Jasmine are blooming and the honey bees are busy. I like this shot of the bee because the eye is so prominent and of course, I loved the cheerful yellow blossoms. Check it out in the larger sizes for details on the bee. Bee's are amazing creatures, and I try to photograph them when I can. You'll see another bee shot tomorrow. “After you get stung, you can't get unstung no matter how much you whine about it.” ― Sue Monk Kidd, The Secret Life of Bees Have a "bee-u-tiful" day today my friends! Linda
August 20, 2011 This is a close shot of a penguin at Sea World in San Antonio, TX - it is in the fridgid quarters where they live. This one was friendly & came right up and "squawked" at us. This is SOOC. Even though we were cold inside his lair it was a great relief from the heat that day. I thought he was pretty cute - don't recall what what 'species' of penguin he is. Thanks to everyone for your comments on the "wives" reflection shot yesterday. I really appreciate them all very much. I'm sorry that I have been so remiss on commenting the last few days, but I plan to get caught up soon. Bill and I are leaving later today for another vacation/business trip in New Mexico. Have a great trip.
July 31, 2013 Hanging by a thread, but so secure in the web. I have no idea what kind of spider this is, but it's rather colorful and I thought the web it had made was most interesting. The heavy zig zag pattern in the center was curious to me. I must admit I'm not crazy about spiders, but I realize they often do a lot of good in the world, like eating mosquitos. If anyone out there knows what kind of spider this is, I'd love to hear from you. I found this guy out in the cactus garden, and couldn't resist trying to capture his world. "Fiction is like a spider's web, attached ever so slightly perhaps, but still attached to life at all four corners. Often the attachment is scarcely perceptible." ~ Virginia Woolf Have a special day today my friends! Linda
Shhhsh! Do Not Wake the Sleeping Giant
October 19, 2012 This photo reminds me of the old saying, "Let sleeping dogs lie." Indeed that seemed appropriate as I spied upon & got as close as I dared to this sleeping buffalo near the buildings at Mormon Row, Wyoming. Thanks so much for your comments yesterday of my "up close" shot of the buffaloes in the Aspens. Life is crazy, work and taking care of Bill is taking a lot of my time, so I've been very remiss on commenting. I'll try to catch up over the weekend if I can. Just know that I enjoy hearing from you. Have a fantastic day my friends! Linda
August 7, 2011 "A Couple of Happy, but Hot Pooches" These guys were so cute, and friendly I couldn't resist taking their photo. But I think you can tell, they were pretty hot while walking around with their owner. Thanks so much for all the comments on the shot of Ashlee feeding the Dolphins, I realy appreciated them all and she was thrilled too!!! Have an awesome Sunday everyone! Linda
A Donkey Amongst the Texas Bluebonnets
July 5, 2013 “That which is called firmness in a king is called obstinacy in a donkey” ~ John Erskine quotes This cute little donkey was a bit camera shy and would only show me his profile while out on the bluebonnet safari. Thank you all for the wonderful and kind comments on my flag shot yesterday. Have a flower filled day today my friends. Linda
January 23, 2013 Quintessential Texas - longhorns and bluebonnets, taken last Spring. Have a wonderful day. I'm headed to Reno, Nevado to spend the week with Bill at the Safari Club International show. It will be fun but lots of hours on your feet. Hopefully I'll get time to take some photos. Best, Linda
Buffalo Silhouette at Mormon's Row, Utah
