The Agony of Defeat
August 27, 2019
Thank you all for the comments on some of my old photos while I took 4 days off from posting and commenting to be with my brother at the final drag boat race this year. We were in Waco, Texas and the event was called the “Duel on the Brazos.” There were more than 130 boats racing on the Brazos River this weekend and there was a HUGE crowd watching from the banks and cliffsides. It was crazy hot temps!
There are many “classes” of drag boats in the Southern Drag Boat Racing Association (SDBA). The top and fastest class is the Top Fuel Alcohol, also known as the “Nitro” boats. There weren’t any of those boats at this race. My brother Marty Logan’s class is Top Alcohol Hydro (TAH), the second fastest class of the drag boats.
This is Marty’s first year to race in the TAH class. He’s done OK with the new boat this year, but in Waco the “parts carnage” plagued the crew. The qualifying races were Friday & Saturday. The Finals were on Sunday. Marty’s boat had lots of issues in the Friday & Saturday races – burned up transmissions and clutches, etc. This is a photo after his first qualifying race where the first transmission burned up and he had to be towed off the river. He didn’t get very far off the starting line, let alone make it down the 1,000-foot course. You can see by his body language he was not a happy camper but his attitude, work ethic and indomitable spirit stayed strong all weekend.
The pit crew worked late into the night Friday and Saturday night to get the boat’s issues fixed. When the final races began on Sunday, he was in 6th place – of the 6 boats racing in this class. In the first bracket, he was pitted against the #1 qualifier in his class who on Saturday set a speed record of 202 MPH. Marty beat the #1 boat by a good margin. He then had to race again on Sunday afternoon with the #2 qualifier. He beat that boat too and took the Waco win. In the second and winning race, the boat ran 198.6 mph. Based on the season points for all the TAH boats that raced in 2019, Marty’s win on Sunday gave him the World Championship in his class. This is his 8th World Championship (in different classes) and his first Championship for TAH boat. There were lots of heartbreaks on Friday and Saturday, but the wins on Sunday made it so thrilling!

Thank you for your comments and critiques, very much appreciated.
