Bear Watching in Canada
September 7, 2019
This guy was our guide as we hiked up one of the mountains near Knight Inlet Lodge in British Columbia. We were there to observe Grizzly Bears in their natural habitat. He was so cool, informative and quite a character. He said we’d probably not to have to worry about the bears on the mountain, but he said we should be diligent and watch for them.
In this photo, he is talking to us about finding things to eat in the rainforest. Shortly after his lecture, we started back up the mountain. About 4 hours into the uphill hike, our friend Mike (who was at the rear of our group) softly said "Bear" and tapped his wife Betty on the shoulder. She then tapped me on the shoulder and said "Bear". I looked over my shoulder, and there was a huge Grizzly about 10 yards behind Mike. Then I tapped Bill on the shoulder and whispered, "Tell the guide that there's a Grizzly bear on our heels.” Bill then tapped the guide on the shoulder and quietly told him that there was a Grizzly behind us, right on our heels. The guide went into immediate protection mode. He quietly said to us all, "Be quiet, don’t move." He then got in my face, pointed his finger at me and whispered, "Do NOT take photos." He then began to softly talk to the bear and walk slowly towards the him. The Grizzly stopped and sized us up, we were all statue-still. Finally the bear did turn away from being directly behind us, and then it veered around us and continued on up the mountain to the top. The guide asked, “Do you want to continue to hike to top of the mountain?” We had been hiking for 4 hours up the mountain and we decided it was time to turn around and head back down. We really didn't want to follow the bear up to the top. Great times, great guide with great friends.
“May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” ~ Edward Abbey
