Billy the Kid ~ by Linda
March 8, 2023
This is the sign outside of the “Billy the Kid” museum in Hico, Texas. Wild West outlaw Billy the Kid died in 1881 – or did he escape, vanish, and live on under the name of Brushy Bill Roberts in Hico, Texas until 1950? The “real” Billy the Kid was born Henry McCarty and later was known as William H. Bonney. He was an outlaw who lived a short but tumultuous life. As a mere teenager, Billy the Kid fought a war over control of the New Mexico Territory during which he killed three people, then he fled to Arizona Territory as a fugitive and killed 5 more people. According to history, he was killed in 1881 by Sheriff Pat Garrett. After almost 70 years after Billy the Kid’s death (or alleged death), a man named Joe Hines made an interesting confession to his lawyer, William Morrison. His confession was that Billy the Kid was alive and living as Brushy Bill Roberts in Hico, Texas. While there are still doubts about Brushy Bill Roberts’ credibility, it’s a fun mystery. There’s still a question about whether he was, or was not, the real Billy the Kid. Nonetheless, there is a museum in Hico, Texas dedicated to Brushy Bill Roberts’ and his claim to have been Billy the Kid.
“I don’t blame you for writing of me as you have. You had to believe other stories, but then I don’t know if anyone would believe anything good of me anyway.” ~ Billy the Kid
Thank you for your comments and critiques, I do appreciate them very much!
Have an historical day.
