Van at the Fort
November 7, 2019
In this photo, you see (from L to R) Granddaughter Ashlee, her friend Lillie, Bill and our friend Van. Van is pronounced Von. We met Van 8 years ago on our first trip to Nassau, Bahamas. We hit it off and he toured us around the island, took us to his home to meet his wife and showed us the Nassau that most casual tourists don’t see. We love him. In the 8 years since that first meeting, we call each other about 6-8 times a year. He always calls me on Mother’s Day and Bill on Father’s Day. We call him on Christmas and at Easter, and then there’s random other calls and Facetime calls throughout the year. When Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas, we were so afraid. We finally got through to him on Face Time, and he was the one who told us that the devastating damage was happening on Grand Bahama. Where he lives in Nassau saw a lot of wind and rain, but not the devastation seen elsewhere.
So, when we were planning our trip back to Nassau in June of this year, of course we called to talk to him. And wanted to make a date to see him, and he volunteered to drive us and the girl’s around the island. We had such a great time. This is Fort Charlotte, which is a British-colonial era fort built on a hill over-looking the harbor of Nassau. The fort is just a short way from downtown Nassau. There is so much history there. We really enjoyed our visit there and the time we got to spend with our dear friend Van.
