Unique Bell Tower
September 29, 2019
This is the Corley Bell Tower in Italy, Texas. The name of the town is pronounced by locals as “It – LEE” not as you would pronounce the name of the country in Europe. The tower (which is quite small compared to most bell towers) was erected in 1952 by Randal Corley as a memorial to the Civil War veterans. The 650-pound bronze bell was imported from Aarle-Extel Company in Holland. It has bronze strikes and a mechanical clock. The door at the front leads to a stairway up to the part of the structure where the bell is housed. It is always locked and cannot be accessed without permission from the family who owns the home where it stands today.
“A bell’s not a bel ‘til you ring it, A song’s not a song ‘til you sing it, Love in your heart wasn’t put there to stay, Love isn’t love ‘til you give it away!” ~ Oscar Hammerstein II
