Where Are the Grizzly Bears?
October 5, 2018
I will apologize up front for this long post; however, I think it is important to share with the loyal members of SM as a need to know post. This is SmugMug's comment back to me on my very passionate 4th email to them. They do not care about our desires.
Thanks for getting in touch and letting us know. I'll reach out to that SmugMug account owner and remind him about the gallery privacy settings he should be using.
As to the change to Today's Popular Photos, SmugMug is committed to providing our customers with a great website platform for their photography, and to do so we are continuously improving the way that our site works, including the way that the search functionality works. The 'popular' photo status is meant to surface the most popular photos within each SmugMug site, if that customer wants to display them in a slideshow or other content block, to their visitors.
A number of factors determine the 'popularity' of a photo, including things like comments and views (the number of times a photo is opened) for the purpose of displaying that photo as a popular photo on the specific customer's SmugMug site.
The 'Today's Popular' photos are impacted by the changes to the way search works, but they were never meant as a replacement to the former SmugMug communities. We have a great forum at http://www.dgrin.com where you can interact with other photographers, see gorgeous photography from around the globe, and ask for critique. There are many other photography forums that offer the same sort of experience. Flickr, which is now owned by SmugMug, also offers a lot in the way of photography communities and a way to interact with other photographers."
Sad times in SM land. If you find a site besides Flickr and FB to share images and interact with great photographers, I'd love to know.
